Legacy in the Dust: The Four Aces Story + Q&A

Presented in collaboration with the Hackney History Festival, join us for a very special Q&A screening of Dalston-based documentary Legacy In The Dust: The Four Aces Story, with live on-stage post-screening panel discussion with director Winstan Whitter, and community elders. The documentary charts the life and death of the legendary 'The Four Aces Club', which was regarded as London’s equivalent to the New York Apollo. The club was instrumental in introducing new music genres to the UK and played host to some of the most influential international musicians of our time, including Stevie Wonder, The Skatalites, Ben ‘E’King, The Ronettes, Desmond Dekker, Otis Redding and many others. Started in 1966 in the entrance halls of the 1886 Dalston Coliseum and theatre buildings, 12 Dalston Lane was home to many reggae sound systems including Count Shelly and Sir Coxone, who hosted talent contests and made the discovery of Louisa Mark who gave birth to the Lovers Rock genre. Frequent patrons of the club included Bob Dylan, The Clash, Malcom Mclaren, Billy Ocean, Vivienne Westwood and Bob Marley. The venue played an integral part during 70s and 80s against the backdrop of social issues like, racism, violence and SUS Laws. In the 1980s the Four Aces merged with the main auditorium, it became north London’s legendary home to ‘Labyrinth’ pioneering the new music genres of acid house and drum & bass where ‘The Prodigy’ made one of their first public appearances. The first Hackney History Festival takes place from May 10th to May 12th, 2024 at Hackney Archives and Sutton House with satellite events at other venues throughout Hackney during May, this screening being one of them. This community festival features talks, walks, and guided tours showcasing some of the iconic buildings and spaces located in Hackney, which is considered as Europe’s most diverse borough.
