PINK PALACE: GYPSY

Pink Palace our award winning weekly queer film club, presents one of the greatest, campest musicals of all time, GYPSY (1962) starring Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood and Karl Malden. Based loosely on the true story of Americas greatest burlesque star and adapted from the hit Broadway musical by Jule Styne/Stephen Sondheim, Gypsy tells the story of Rose Hovick (Rosalind Russell) who dreams of making her young daughter a child star, relentlessly traveling and promoting Baby June from theatre to theatre across the USA during the Great Depression. After years of struggle June eventually quits and elopes with one of her backing dancers, leaving Rose with what she considered her less talented awkward tomboy daughter, Louise (Natalie Wood). At the end of their dreams and worn out by poverty, the only offer is at a grubby burlesque house, much to Rose's horror, but Louise takes to it and transforms herself into the mega star stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. As Gypsy's career takes off, she grows tired of her pushy stage mother's influence, but no one can hold Rose back... Natalie Wood and Karl Malden deliver incredible performances however, no one stands a chance while the magnificent Rosalind Russell is on screen, like a human tornado she tears her way through every scene stealing all the limelight and belting out show stopping number after show stopping number. Get ready for the emotional rollercoaster that is Gypsy. "Gypsy is a musical much loved by that audience, especially that not inconsiderable group of gay men who adore over-the-top divas, which it delivers in the form of Mama Rose, the ultimate stage mother, pushing her daughters to the showbiz success that eluded her. Then there's all the gay talent that went into its creation: scenarist Arthur Laurents, choreographer Jerome Robbins (for the original Broadway production), and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, who collaborated with composer June Styne to write some of the most memorable songs in theater history, including "Let Me Entertain You," "Everything's Coming Up Roses," and "Rose's Turn... As Gypsy Rose Lee, Louise goes on to hit the heights of fame, accompanying her sexy dances with unexpectedly intellectual patter. Rose is left to wonder, in words written by Sondheim, "When is it my turn? Don't I get a dream for myself?" The Advocate Please note there are NO ads or trailers, we start on time!
