PINK PALACE: MAURICE

Pink Palace our award winning weekly queer film club presents the ground breaking tale of repressed love from Merchant Ivory based on the novel by E.M. Forster. First shown at the Rio in March 1988, Maurice was caught up in the horror of the upcoming legislation - Section 28, the Rio brochure at the time stated " as a "positive" portrayal of homosexuality Maurice is the kind of film which the Rio (as a local authority funded project) will be banned from showing" The repressed and bourgeois Maurice Hall (James Wilby) tackles the prejudices of Edwardian society as he comes to terms with his sexuality, in this landmark drama from the team behind A Room with a View and Howard's End. "A gay man in Edwardian England is seen to have three choices. Like Durham (Grant), he can opt for frigid, respectable marriage; like Viscount Risley (Tandy), he can solicit soldiers in bars and be grateful for six months* hard labour; or, more bravely, like Maurice (Wilby), he can risk everything for requited love. It takes a long time for Maurice to reach this point; only in the arms of his game-keeping bit of rough (Graves) does he realise that he's been taught 'what isn't right' The initial stages, set in Brideshead country: are jerky but, thereafter, the original's social comedy and serious passion are superbly evoked. Without necessarily accepting the class ridden assumptions of E.M. Forster's original novel and their translation to the screen, it is possible to enjoy Maurice for the qualities that it shares with the best Merchant Ivory productions." - original Rio brochure copy from 1988 Described by The Guardian as undervalued and underseen and a pre-cursor to the James Ivory - scripted Call Me By Your Name, Maurice is a landmark film as important as any in the history of gay cinema and one that presents a positive and enriching portrait of first love.
